This basic seminar, with instructor, Rick Newton, offers an equality based understanding, exploring the concepts of Person Centered Thinking and Positive Behavioral Supports in terms of their application to people with autism.
Positive Behavioral Approaches invites an understanding of the entire person. Traditional behavioral approaches have failed to demonstrate the effectiveness of this global approach.
The philosophies of Person Centered Thinking will be discussed through thte concept of Autism. The human side of supporting people; the joys, dilemmas, setbacks and victories, that are the hear of our work.

Joy Zabala, Ph.D.
Teachers and parents want students to succeed, but a one-size-fits-all approach to education simply does not work. How can educators respond to individual differences? CAST’s solution is called Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL involves creating flexible methods and materials that accommodate learner differences. Dr. Zabala is the Director of Technical Assistance for the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), located in Wakefield, MA. Visit www.cast.org for more info.
Terri Couwenhoven, M.S.
Terri is the coordinator and health educator at the Down Syndrome Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She is a certified sexuality educator and author of Teaching Children with Down Syndrome about Their Bodies, Boundaries, and Sexuality. She specializes in developing programs and resources that address healthy sexuality and relationship issues for people with developmental disabilities. Free on-site childcare by licensed providers, free parking, lunch, CEU's and PDU's
This informative day long conference will give parents the tools they need when attending IFSP/IEP meetings, making the every day decisions tha need to be made and give parents an opportunity to meet with other parents. Although this conference focuses on families whose children experience deafness/hearing loss, and the professionals who work with them, the information is relevant to all families who have a child with a disability.

- IFSP/IEP as it relates to IDEA with Barbara Raimondo
- Audiology 101
- Navigating the Oregon Health Plan

Community Activity—Easter Egg Hunt—Kinton Grange

Easter Egg Hunt starts PROMPTLY at 12 Noon. Activities will be held rain or shine. If your child will be participating they need to arrive by 11:30am. This event is wheelchair accessible.
After the hunt there will be a POTLUCK PICNIC--ham, rolls, coffee, children's punch, cookies, and ice cream will be provided. PLEASE bring a casserole or salad large enough to feed 10 people.

Vision Screening—OHSU Casey Eye Institute and Oregon State Elks

The first 100 families with children from 3-8 years of age and their siblings who sign up will be able to take part in this great event on Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 10am. This is an opportunity to obtain a FREE vision screening, using the PlusOptix Autorefractor--a simple tool that takes a quick video of your eyes in 15 seconds. At the same time enjoy a fun-filled Easter Egg Hunt (with beeping eggs), courtesy of the Oregon State Elks and the Casey Eye Institute.

The Disability Provider Network of Clackamas County is sponsoring the 2010 Clackamas County Disability Resource Fair, Thursday, March 18, 2010. There is no cost for this event. This Resource Fair is for Clackamas County residents to learn about resources and services available in the community.

Community Activity—Sensory Saturdays at Canby Cinema 8

Sensory Saturday is for kids (and adults) with special needs or with just sensory issues. On a monthly basis Canby Cinema 8 will open their doors for children and their families for a Sensory Saturday movie. All movies are going to be Family oriented. On Saturday, March 20, 2010, the movie is "Diary of a Whimpy Kid." Although this is a family movie, it is rated PG for some rude humor and language. For some insight visit "Diary of a Whimpy Kid."

- Cost is $6.50 each but if you buy 10 or more they are only $5.00 each.
- Lights will not be turned all the way down, sound will not be turned all the way up, and the kids can walk and or dance around, with no worry of disturbing the rest of the public.

Autism Society of Oregon (ASO)—8th Annual Autism Walk-a-thon

8th annual Autism Walk-a-thon will be held on Sunday, April 18th at Oaks Park in SE Portland! In 2009, about 4,000 people attended this walk held during April, Autism Awarness Month, making it the largest autism event in Oregon. Families, friends, neighbors, teachers and strangers come together to show support for people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The registration desk opens at 9:30 a.m. The walk begins at 10:30 and the Oaks Park rides start up at 11:00 a.m. This is a short one mile walk around Oaks Park property. And afterwards, many people stay to partake in the exciting rides or take in a picnic at Oaks Park. ASO will have discounted ride braclets to purchase at a price of $12/each ($2 off retail price).

She shared, it is like planning for a trip to one location only to discover you have arrived somewhere else. Shocked and feeling unprepared, one can miss the beauty of the new destination. Join with other parents as we discover together the beauty and intrigue of our new destination. Repeats the second Tuesday (except February-see below) of each month from January thru June, at the United Way Community Center, Suite 102, 6:30pm - 8pm.
Some of the topics we will discuss and learn about:
- Disability is a natural part of life!
- Available resources (books, websites, groups)
- Different disability-specific and cross-disability parent groups
- Practical tips and tools from parents who "are taking the tour"
