Oregon Training Series on Direct Supports

The Oregon Developmental Disabilities (DD) Coalition is pleased to announce the 2008 Oregon Trainings Series on Direct Supports, which will be hosted by the coalition with funds from the Oregon Department of Human Services, Seniors & People with Disabilities Division. This series of trainings will be targeted to direct support providers and related professionals who support individuals with developmental disabilities. The training series will replace the Oregon Conference on Direct Supports held in Corvallis the past three summers. The change of format is intended to increase the coalition’s capacity to train many more individuals than is possible through a single annual conference.
Six four-hour teleconferences, featuring nationally-recognized speakers such as Kathie Snow, Norm Kunc, David Pitonyak, Cathy Ficker-Terrell, will be delivered to a network of host sites throughout the state for the benefit of direct support providers.
Community Activity in Portland Metro--Multnomah County Library Summer Reading 2008

The Multnomah County Library Summer Reading Game rewards kids of all ages for reading during the summer. Head to your local library to sign up and get a game board for the program, which runs now through August 31, 2008. Children will receive a choice of prizes for each level they complete.

Regal Theatres’ Free Family Film Festival offers G-rated and PG-rated movies for free beginning at 10am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through August 20, 2008. Participating locations include the Stark Street Stadium 10 in Gresham, the Lloyd Mall 8 and Pioneer Place Stadium 6 in Portland, Movies on TV Stadium 16 in Hillsboro, Sherwood Stadium 10 in Sherwood, and Bridgeport Stadium 18 & IMAX and Tigard Cinemas 11 in Tigard.

The Oregon Ballet Theatre (OBT) will head outside for rehearsals, classes and performances wtih their annual OBT Exposed event. Visitors are encouraged to watch the rehearsals, which take place August 25-30, 2008, at the South Park Blocks. A free drop-in ballet class will be offered to 4 to 6 year olds.

Strollathon for Rett Syndrome

The third annual Portland Strollathon for Rett Syndrome will take place on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Laurelhurst Park. This free event includes a 1K stroll around the park, children’s activities, face painting, music and balloons. Registration begins at 1pm and the stroll begfins at 2pm.

ASO’s 3-City Seminar Series on Puberty

Autism Society of Oregon (ASO) is sponsoring a 3 city seminar series this fall on puberty--“Puberty & Sexuality, Warning: Do not look the other way!”--to be hosted in Seaside (September 20, 2008), Eugene (October 18, 2008), and Beaverton (November 8, 2008). The seminar will address the heightened complexities of puberty and strategies for teaching people with autism spectrum disorder how to better handle this inevitable life change. The three speakers, Karen Ripplinger, Lucinda Waddell and Mary Minn Sirag, will share their expertise on this subject.

“Living and Learning”--United Cerebral Palsy (UCP)’s 13th Annual Family Conference on Cerebral Palsy and related disabilities will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 3-4, 2008 at the Red Lion Jantzen Beach hotel--909 N Hayden Island Drive in Portland, 97217. This year’s keynote speaker is Tom Ritter. Tom is an individual with cerebral palsy who served on the UCP national board and wrote the foreword to the book “Children with Cerebral Palsy.”
